Chelmsford’s history as a town goes back to roman times, when Chelmsford was founded as a centre of administration and trade of goods to and from London (at the time called Londinium), although the town would degrade with viking invasions and lose a lot of its wealth. During the time of the Normans the town would be restored as a market town, and those Norman foundations mark the origin for the old town centre today, which now serves as a city centre following Chelmsford’s elevation to a city.
