More Information on Colchester
Colchester is recorded as the oldest town in all of England, since the town served as the roman capital in ancient times and has been in continuous use as a market town since the 2nd century, and there is evidence that it was inhabited before even then! Originally a fortress, the town evolved to become a large market town through the middle ages, and has been that way ever since. Interestingly, the old fortress at Colchester might be the original inspiration for the mythical fortress of Camelot and King Arthur. As the very first kings of England likely came from Colchester.
Although the original fortress no longer exists, Colchester Castle is a Norman fort built on top of the old foundations of the roman fortress, and is the main attraction of Colchester for tourists. The site has also been named an international world heritage site for its important in English history. Another hangover from ancient times, Colchester is one of only 12 places that has a permanent military garrison. It’s also one of the few places where the Royal 21-gun salute is fired on royal anniversaries, a tradition popular with tourists.
