The main industry in Dartford has always been commercial in nature. Dartford being a town that was founded as a market town in medieval times, and still has a thriving retail market. To name other prominent industries Dartford is also known for brewing beer, chalk mining and wool cleansing. Dartford is also an important naval base, as it is the only place in the UK for nuclear refuelling and repairing. The river Darent also provides Hydro-power for the town, as part of a shift nationally towards renewable energy.

More Information on Dartford
Dartford was originally a market town and important way-point for pilgrims travelling from Canterbury to mainland Europe. The town still has buildings from that era, like Dartford Manor that used to house an order of Knights Templar. Dartford still has some remnants of early hospitals in the area, set up by various religious orders to care for the sick. Henry VIII also built manor houses in Dartford, further adding to the history of the town.
Some of the first paper and iron mills in England were also founded in Dartford by immigrants from the Netherlands, which started the trend in Dartford towards a strong engineering industry. The town also, at its peak, had dozens of large companies set up factories in and around Dartford the mustard factory of Saunders & Harrison which was arguably the largest factory of its kind in the UK at the time. The port at Dartford would also be extended at this time, and used as a Royal Navy base in World War One and World War Two.
